Government Help for the Self-Employed

by Computare on 03/27/20

At last the Government has declared how the self-employed will be helped during this crisis.  See our Covid-19 page for our latest understanding of the situation.

In a nutshell you will receive a taxable grant equal to 80% of the average taxable profit of your last three tax returns.  The years are 2016/17, 2017/18, and 2018/19.  For those of you fully up to date we hope that this will be a fairly routine exercise and that we can offer this service through the HMRC online portal.  It's still unclear what the process will be but we are monitoring the situation closely.  We will keep our charges to a minimum but we need to cover costs.

Unfortunately if you are behind in submitting your tax returns then it is going to be a much more complex and expensive process.  At this uncertain time we will need to be paid in advance before we undertake any work relating to previous tax years.  The only alternative to this is in the case of an expected tax refund that could be paid directly into our client account.  There is still time to qualify but the closing date is 26th April 2020.

Obviously there will be newly self-employed without three year's records.  We understand that there is still help but that it will be based upon actual earnings within the 2019/20 tax year.  It is unclear how this process will work.

If you are still concerned about your own circumstances please read our Covid-19 page and the recommended links.  If you can not find an answer then do please send an email to the person who normally processes your accounts.

Coronavirus Update

by Computare on 03/16/20

In order to reduce the spread of Coronavirus we will be operating slightly differently from usual.

We have been inundated with telephone calls so we ask at this time for contact via e-mail only so that we can catch up and deal with your questions. We will no longer be sending physical records by post. Please be vigilant with checking your emails.

In addition to this, if you would normally be dropping your records to our office during this period please consider whether your paperwork is small enough to scan across to us via email. If you do not have access to a scanner, we will accept photographs of documents.

If you need to collect or drop physical records, we ask that you contact a member of our team to ensure this is done in the safest possible way.

Our aim is to keep the risk to both our staff and clients to a minimum.

Understandably many of you will have questions regarding the treatment of your staff at this time. As this information is new and constantly changing, we ask that you refer to the advice published by HMRC on the following link:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-employers-and-businesses-about-covid-19/guidance-for-employers-and-businesses-on-covid-19

As it stands, employees who are self-isolating due to Coronavirus, will be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) from the first day they are absent. Employees are allowed to self certify their sickness for the first 7 days, HMRC are encouraging employers to be flexible with regards to employee's providing medical evidence for any absence longer than 7 days.

It has been mentioned in the budget that employers of smaller businesses may be able to reclaim some of the SSP in the new tax year, however this is not applicable for SSP in the current tax year. Information on this reclaim has not yet been published.

If you have an employee who is off sick, we ask that we notify the member of staff who usually processes your payroll. They will need to know the employee's usual working pattern, the date their absense commenced and the date they returned to work.

Any employees who are absent due to other illnesses will still have to suffer the three-waiting days. We will also require a self-certification form for the first 7 days.

We will try to answer your queries to the best of our abilities but we urge you to contact either HMRC or ACAS first.

We appreciate your patience at this time.

If you have any worries please contact a member of our team and we would be more than happy to help you.

Christmas Payroll Processing Schedule

by Computare on 12/03/15

We will be closed from Monday 21st December, and will be reopening again on Monday 4th January 2016. This means that we will have to process some payrolls in advance in order for you to pay your employees for the Christmas period.

If your payroll is standard every week or month, we will process as normal. However, if you wish to make any changes for these particular weeks over Christmas and New Year, then please inform us in advance. (i.e. bonuses or salary changes).

If your company is a variable monthly payroll, we would appreciate it if you could contact us as early as possible with the payroll figures, and at the latest by Friday 18th December.

If your company is weekly variable hours paid in arrears, please could you call or e-mail us as follows:

A) For week ending Sunday 20th December (pay dates between Monday 21st and Saturday 26th December) you will need to give us the payroll information by Monday 21st December at the latest.

B) We will also need the projected figures for week ending Sunday 27th December (pay dates between Monday 28th and Saturday 2nd January.) We process the payroll in advance so that the payment can be made during week ending Saturday 2nd January. We appreciate that this will include some estimated figures but we will be able to run any necessary adjustments on our return.

We will process all payrolls for the week ending Sunday 3rd January (pay dates between Monday 4th and Saturday 9th January 2016) on our return Monday 4th January 2016.

If you have any questions regarding the above, please do not hesitate to contact us.
